Don't quote me on this but I believe Plymouth started offering the OD in 52. This doesn't mean you can't add one to your 49. Other Mopars were equipped with ODs going back to the 30s. I have one that will be hooked up to my 49 wagon

Overdrive - Not an Option in 1949 Plymouth

The overdrive was not an option for 49 Plymouths but as suggested a 49 can be modified quite easily to use one. I think 1952 is correct as the first year for the factory overdrive in Plymouth.

Each and every 1952 Plymouth was powered by the same time tested, 218 cube, 97 horse in-line six. The only available gearbox was a three speed standard with column mounted shifter, although overdrive was a new option priced at $102.00 and was one of only a few mechanical changes for 1952.

Good going in your Plymouth! :driving:

what does the letter after th R10 stand for?
I have 2 one a "E" the other a "H" , are the parts interchangable when coupled with a 1949 tranny?
anyone know of problems mating the two?
