hi,
I am looking at trading my car and getting a 49 deluxe coupe. So far I love the car, but I haven't found one good source for parts online. This is kind of a determining factor. I really don't want a car that I can't find parts for. I have found some decent sources for engine and transmission parts but almost nowhere have I found pieces of trim and accessories or interior. A couple of people have sited Lebaron but I cannot find anything on there website, just a few Chevy and Ford interior parts.

The car runs but needs new points, the hub caps are missing, I can deal with bad seats for a little while but where can I get material to recover them and where can I find interior door panels??

kind sad I can't find a really good source for parts and although I have seen people's restoration pics, I none of them have said where they got all of the parts.

any help on this would be awesome

Hi, and thanks for the post. I suspect that you could make that Club Coupe shine. Admittedly parts for our old Plymouth's are more difficult to come across than for Ford's or Chevy's but that's sorta what makes them special .... they aren't like all of the others. So, it just depends on what you are looking for. If you want fast and cheap......'49 Plymouth's are seldom either. If you want good and cheap .... be patient, parts are available and there are a LOT of folks willing to help if you show that you are doing your part to learn what exactly it is that you need and aren't expecting it all to come for free.

1. Get a parts book and a service manual ..... you will learn the names of parts and be able to better communicate your needs with others.
2. Get all of the basic sales catalogs for vendors that you can pour through and looks at who has what. That list includes Steele's Rubber, Restoration Specialties, Rhode Island Wire, Kanter Auto, SMS, and JC Whitney to name some primary ones.
3. Create a directory of all of the vendors that do have old Mopar parts. Check this site for a vendors list and look at others that deal with Mopars. Nothing like your own Mopar vendor subdirectory all nice and bookmarked. Some key ones are Andy Bernbaum, Neil Riddle, Roberts Motors, Atlas Parts, Kanter Auto, Mitchell Motors and several long time vendors on eBay who handle lots of mopar parts.
4. Get a Hollander Interchange Guide for 1946 - 1956 Vehicles. It may not say on eBay that it fits a '49 plymouth but Hollander will tell you. And sometimes you can buy the parts from another vehicle cheaper than for a '49 plymouth. Go figure.
5. Buy a Hemmings Auto magazine on a grocery shelf near you.
6. Join Plymouth Owners Club .... their monthly magazine is great and there is a very good vendor and parts of sale section.
7. Join the P15-D24 website and the 49-50plymouth Yahoo groups site .... lots of ideas on each of those too.

So there are some ideas ...... but if you don't have the patience to deal with most of the above .... you might be better off buying a Chevy.

Good luck ... I'm sure most everything you might need is available. And, why trade? All you do with a business coupe is lose the back seat!

John

Another angle .... you can drive over to your local NAPA store and still buy some to a lot of what you need there. Ignition parts aren't much of a problem there. They have fuel pumps and water pumps. They have tie rod ends and bearings. Go to RockAuto (http://www.rockauto.com) and check them out. They have quite a few parts online for '49 plymouths. Hubcaps ..... some aftermarkets (moonies) work just fine or you can find original style caps on eBay. Interior parts ..... cloth a LeBarron-Bonney and SMS. Clips, windlace, headliner, and door panel material at Restoration Specialties. Wiring at Rhode Island Wire. Plus, keep in mind that many, if not most of the larger parts within your car can be rebuilt including small electric motors, entire engines, heater cores, starters, generators, fuel pumps, distributors etc etc.

And, on your seat covers ..... do you want to restore the seat or just cover the seats. Restorations .... go to LeBarron-Bonney or SMS or ??? others exist. But, to just cover them. Look on eBay for slip covers. Check out JC Whitney for headliner material. Go to JoAnn's Fabrics for basic auto-style fabric that will work and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Go to a local autobody place to see if you can get some door panel core to build new platforms for your doors.

Dito what Johnny S posted. To me, half the pleasure of owning a '49 Plymouth is the search for parts. I've had a '49 convertible for about 6 years and finding parts for that can be a challange. Body parts are different for a convertible vs a sedan or coupe. Anyway, the parts are out there, it's just a matter of finding the sources. There isn't one place that offers everything for our cars.

I have listed several places below where I have purchased parts.
There are also people out there that don't use internet. They are a little harder to find, but ask around at car shows. (Just last year I found a guy 30 miles from me with a warehouse of old dealer stock. He doesn't advertise, but he's got stuff for sale.)

Good luck. I think you should go for it.
