Regulator sticking

Post by George » Mon Sep 17th, 2012 2:52

My 1949 plymouth SD has just been rebuilt including new paint from the ground up.. The problem I am having is the voltage regulator does not release when I turn the switch off, and I have to take battery cable off to release it. It also shows discharge when running but does move towards charge when reving the engine. Both the regulator and the switch are new and I have followed the polarization process. Does anyone have any suggestions for me??

I got fed up with the old setup and bought a 6v pos. ground 1 wire alternator and a universal bracket off ebay and am a very happy man.

Kept the original stuff just in case even though it wasn't working.

I am not into a 12V conversion yet but may be in time....

That sounds like a good solution..did you use your existing voltage regulator? Was you regulator sticking like I described?

Mine just stopped working, had it checked out by a mechanic with the right machine that said the regulator was acting funny
$40
New 6V positive ground regulator
$60
Maybe 20 hrs trying to make it all work with no good results
Priceless

Fix!
New 6v positive ground alternator
$50
Universal bracket
$30
It works in 2 easy hours!
Again PRICELESS!

To answer your question, I think the regulator was toast and the new 1 wire alternator requires no regulator!! :D

The mechanic said it was "acting funny" and the car was not charging.
